Cargo ship runs aground off Norway

02 Sep 2014

Norrland, a 107-meter ro-ro cargo ship, has run aground along the shore of Kinsarvik (off Ullensvang, Norway).

The incident occurred when the vessel hit a sandy shallow while being en route from Haugesund to Boliden Odda in Odda with 12-man crew onboard. Preliminary inspection showed the grounding was caused by a technical issue of the steering gear. There were no reports of injuries or pollution.

Several hours later, Norrland was refloated and anchored off Ullensvang where is awaiting detail assessment. The crew will be fined because they did not inform the local authorities. The authorities were notified by witnesses.

Norrland (IMO number 8818764 and MMSI 304010253) was built in 1990 in Germany. The vessel is registered in Antigua & Barbuda. The GT 5,562-tonne ship is owned and operated by Brise Bereederung, Germany.
