Cargo vessel sinks in Japan Sea, at least one dead

04 Sep 2014

Poline, a general cargo vessel, has sunk in the Japan Sea causing the dead of at least one crew member. Search is underway for one missing seafarer.

The incident occurred on September 4 early in the morning (local time). The vessel was en route from Plastun to China laden with 2,034 tonnes of timber when it got caught in stormy weather. Poline sailed with 10-man crew – nine Russians and one Ukrainian.

Five vessels immediately headed to the scene - the 50,574-tonne container vessel Hanjin Newport, the 123-meter Aldan, the 190-meter bulker Simferopol, Japanese patrol ship Daisen and the 74,500-tonne bulker Golden Suek. Five crew members were picked from a lifeboat by Aldan, two were rescued by Golden Suek and two (one died later) by Hanjin Newport. One crew member is still missing. The captain of the vessel suffered hypothermia after spending 17 hours in the water.

Poline (IMO number 7904528 and MMSI 515555000) was built in 1981. The 82-meter vessel is registered in Cambodia.
