Malta as a Yacht Charter Destination

27 Jun 2014

Malta is the perfect destination for a yacht charter – in fact you maybe be led to believe you’ve taken a journey back in time! There are plenty of magnificent sights to take in around this small coastline.

Island Architecture and Culture

Probably the most impressive of all of these is entry to the Grand Harbour on a sailing boat. It is considered by many to be one of the world’s finest natural harbours. It is truly something to behold. The enormous limestone bastions that surround much of the harbour are incredibly imposing nowadays – just imagine what it would have been like to those entering the harbour in the 16th Century.

Should you choose to stop on the island and venture inland, there is plenty more to see in terms of history, culture and architecture. There are ancient temples, elaborate religious rituals and unique cuisine to be discovered.

Additionally, Maltese architecture is a mish-mash of influences from civilisations that have risen and fallen along the shores of the Mediterranean. You can see Arabic, Baroque and Rococo influences in most of the island’s towns and villages.

Weather and Beaches

One cannot talk about Malta without talking about the glorious weather. In fact, it is considered to have one of the best climates in the entire world, with up to 300 sunny days each year. Malta is ripe for visiting anywhere between April and October, although the weather is generally good all year round.

The island’s beaches are surprisingly varied considering its size – whether you prefer sandy or rocky, well-known or secluded, you’re guaranteed to find your perfect spot along the shoreline. Little Armier, St. Peter’s Pool and Paradise Bay are always great bets for a long, lazy day out in the sun.

Gozo and Comino

Malta has two sister islands, Gozo and Comino. Gozo is home to about 20,000 people and harks back to what pre-urbanised Malta was like. With that being said, the island has its own distinct atmosphere. It was actually alluded to in one of the world’s oldest pieces of literature – the Odyssey written by the Ancient Greek poet Homer. Great beaches abound here too, as they do in Malta; however the best way to approach Gozo is to set out to discover the similarities and differences to the main island. If you fancy a spot of diving, the dive sites off Gozo are some of the best in the Mediterranean.

Comino is actually uninhabited other than a solitary hotel which is found at Santa Marija Bay. Although this bay is enchanting in itself, Comino’s big draw is the Blue Lagoon. Head there, moor and enjoy it during the week though, because the place does tend to get hectic on weekends. There are numerous other islands and islets in the Maltese Archipelago however they are also uninhabited and very small.

Yacht Facilities and Services

In terms of yachting facilities, Malta has them in abundance. There are plenty of places to moor, whether in a marina or a secluded bay. When it comes to superyachts, the Grand Harbour Marina is the place for them. There is also dry-docking space available for such vessels.

Whatever its size, Malta is an ideal port for a yacht to be berthed over the winter. If you happen to be an owner, we can guarantee that your crew will not get bored when on some down-time! Vella Marine offers complete yachting services, from maintenance, to management, crew recruitment and more. Enquire today should you requite yachting-related assistance or services.
