MOL Comfort’s Stern Sank One Year Ago Today – PHOTOS

01 Jul 2014

On June 27, 2013, the MOL Comfort’s stern section sank in the middle of the Indian Ocean with some 1,700 containers and 1,500 metric tons of fuel oil. These photos were shot during a five minute period by an Indian Coast Guard vessel that was in the area.

The sinking came 10 after the ship first broke in two while underway from Singapore to Jeddah with a load of 7,041 TEUs. The foreword section stayed afloat for more than a week afterwards before it eventually burst into flames and sank. An investigation into the sinking has not been able to determine a definitive cause for the accident.
